The Historical Society of Stillwater Township is proud to be able to offer genealogy services to our members and to the community. We are supported solely by donations and fund-raising so we must charge for these services. Our researchers are not paid employees, they are driven by a passion for history and donate their time, resources and energy for our cause.

Genealogy Research Fee
Free for members and non-members if you perform your own research at our library during open hours.
Genealogy requests
We accept genealogy requests via email, fax and mail. After we review your request and mutually agree that additional research is worthy an initial fee of $40.00 will be due before work begins. This will cover 2 hours of research and is charged regardless of the results. We will check census records, will abstract records, Snell's Sussex and Warren County History books, New Jersey marriage records, the 1860 and 1874 maps of the area, our society's files and various other local history books and locally published resources, such a cemetery lists, church records, and the New Jersey Genealogical Society magazines. This initial fee covers 10 photocopied pages of records. If more copies are requested, they are at a cost of 25 cents per copy.
It is helpful if you are very specific about what you are looking for so that we don't repeat your research.
If, after 2 hours of research, we find that there is still more research on your family to be done, we will contact you with our results and our report. We will estimate the time that it will take to complete the look-up and we will give you the option of continuing to use our services. Continuing research is charged at a rate of $10.00 per hour.
Genealogy Related Field work
Occasionally we receive requests for cemetery photos or look-ups at the Sussex County Hall of Records or County Historical Society. If we go out into the field, we charge $25.00 for the trip and $20.00 per hour for the research. The average cemetery photograph session is 1 hour and this covers the photographing of 10 stones. These photographs will be taken in a high resolution image and will be burned onto a CD-Rom for your records. You must develop them or arrange for us to do that for you for an additional fee.
Our scope of field work includes the Sussex County Hall of Records, the Sussex County Library, cemeteries in Sussex County and northern Warren County, such as Stillwater Cemetery, Harmony Hill Cemetery in Stillwater, Yellow Frame Cemetery and cemeteries in Blairstown, Knowlton and Hope.
